Andros Townsend's fantastic debut strike propelled England to a hard-fought victory over Montenegro to remain in control of their own fate in the search for qualification to the World Cup in Brazil.

The Tottenham midfielder's call-up was the surprise selection in Roy Hodgson's starting XI but it proved to be an inspired choice by the 66-year-old as Townsend tormented the visitors all night before burying a shot in off the post late on to cap a blistering debut performance.

England Manager Hodgson has previously been criticised for his conservatism but following bold selections in the forms of Rickie Lambert (two goals in three games) and the live-wire Townsend, the boss might be cut a little more slack ahead of the crunch clash with Poland on Tuesday night.

England we're positive from the start with the North London combination of Townsend and Kyle Walker proving particularly incisive down the right-hand side. Their early pressure resulted in a number of long-range shots but none that could seriously trouble Montenegro's second choice 'keeper, Vukasin Poleksic in goal.

In large periods of the first half Hodgson's men we're frustrated by the Montenegro defence who we're happy to sit deep and protect their goal, knowing England would have to commit bodies forward in search of the crucial first strike.

The best chance of the half came just before the break and it was the busy Townsend who created it. His shot was only palmed out by Poleksic into the path of Rooney but, with the tight angle against him, the Manchester United centre-forward could only connect with the side netting as the chance went begging.

With the sides level at the break, and nerves already beginning to settle in around Wembley, news that an Andriy Yarmolenko strike had given Ukraine a vital 1-0 win over Poland was not the information Hodgson wanted to hear.

Fortunately enough, the breakthrough in London came just three minutes into the second half.

It was Townsend once more who made the difference as his surging run down the right-hand side forced the Montenegro defence back and when his cross was cleared to the edge of the area it allowed Danny Welbeck to drive a shot at goal.

Although Poleksic was able to make the save, the ball fell invitingly at Rooney's feet, who made no mistakes in sticking the ball into the back of the net to send Wembley into a delirium of relief. The goal marked the 27-year-old's 27th strike in competitive matches for England taking him clear at the top of the standings.

With the pressure diminished and the visitors starting to tire, England we're gifted a bizarre second goal by Montenegrin midfielder Branco Boskovic.

Smart work between Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge down the left-hand flank resulted in the former's cut-back into the box being intercepted by Boskovic. However, his falsely attempted clearance only resulted in the ball bobbling past Poleksic and into the far corner, much to the delight of those inside Wembley.

Although the hosts deserved their lead, the two-goal cushion was short-lived as a Montenegrin counter-attack resulted in a scrappy equalising goal.

Substitute Fatos Beciraj's dragged shot was heading off target until Dejan Damjanovic stuck out a leg to poke it into the far corner past Joe Hart to the stunned silence of Wembley and the despair of Hodgson.

With memories of Graham Taylor's 'impossible job' looming at the back of the former Fulham Manager's mind, up stepped debutant Townsend to quash any thoughts of a nightmare repeat from 20 years ago.

Picking up on loose possession in midfield, Townsend stepped inside and drove at the heart of the Montenegrin defence before unleashing a powerful drive off his weaker right foot that crashed in off the post past a helpless Poleksic.

It was a dream debut strike for the 22-year-old who deserved the standing ovation he received from the Wembley crowd when he was taken off minutes later to be replaced by James Milner. As they exchanged a handshake Hodgson must also have felt the warm satisfaction of a gamble that's paid-off.

Finally in stoppage time Liverpool striker Sturridge put the icing on the cake after his run into the box was illegally stopped by Ivan Kecojevic. The in-form 24-year-old dusted himself down to send Poleksic the wrong way from the spot and gift England a comfortable margin of victory.

It wasn't easy under the Wembley gaze but Hodgson's men deservedly came out on top in the first of their crucial double home fixtures.

You can expect another pressure-cooker atmosphere and cauldron of nerves inside Wembley against Poland on Tuesday night, but, if Townsend can pull out anything like the same performance again, then a trip to Brazil might not be far in the offing.
